Detailed Information
Zakat refers to the specific amount that individuals who possess wealth equal to or above the prescribed threshold (nisab) are required to give to designated recipients for the sake of Allah. For zakat to be obligatory, the following conditions must be met: the wealth must reach the nisab threshold, it must be inherently productive or capable of growth (either in reality or by legal ruling), a full lunar year must have passed since its possession, and it must exceed one’s debts and essential needs.
Nisab is the benchmark of wealth used to determine eligibility for zakat. This threshold is defined as 20 mithqals (80.18 grams) of gold, or in livestock: 5 camels, 30 cattle, or 40 sheep and goats.
In the Holy Qur'an, it is explicitly detailed to whom zakat should be given (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:60), and the nisab (threshold) is specified in the hadiths (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Zakat, 32, 38, 55 [1447, 1454, 1483]; Sahih Muslim, Zakat, 1-5, 7 [979, 981]).
